Title: Philosophic earth lover
Gender: Male
About Me:
Jan 3 ‘07. I write the date here because the moment defines who I am or at least how I view myself. Even confining only to a day is a broad stroke. The fact is that the simple act of writing this will undoubtedly stir an idea or cause me a moments re-examination. The person who started writing this is not the person who finished it. For that reason alone this whole page will be in a state of constant change.
I am fluid but immobile. A corporeal entity trapped on this spinning rock helplessly hurtling through the multiverse to an unknown destination for an unknowable purpose.
I am a parasite upon the skin of the earth mother increasingly aware that at any moment the host can reject the parasite.
In our arrogance we claim the ability to destroy this planet when in fact we merely have the ability make it uninhabitable for a short time for ourselves. The earth mother will continue upon her journey, unaffected by our vastest technologies. We are no more significant than the moth that lives for a day or the forest giant that lives for millenia.
The minute of mans existence will stutter and die like a matchstick’s flame and the multiverse will continue completely unaware of our protestations as to the injustice of our insignificance.
All this sounds rather negative, but it isn’t, far from it. What it tells us is that the multiverse has given us a something of incalculable value. The opportunity to exist if only for a moment with the gift of sentience and intellect to be able to marvel at what it is that surrounds us.
That wonder is what drives me.
10 Jan 07: The earth is about 7000 miles through… Diameter that is. The weather is contained in the atmosphere below 35000 feet… 10, 000 odd metres… 6 or 7 miles. if you were to climb up vertically, roughly every 5200 feet or 1600 metres the temperature would drop by 17 degrees C. from Death Valley, go up three miles naked and you’re in “dead from frost bite” territory…..
The skin we live in is one tenth of one percent the diameter of the planet. Think about that when you peel of some skin next time you’re out in the sun too long.
We are more minute than the microbes that live on our skin.
The cool thing is that we can actually understand that ! Wow!!
